"Critical Essay on 'East of Eden'." Novels for Students. Ed. Jennifer Smith. Vol. 19. Detroit: Gale, 2004. Literature Resource Center. Web. 9 Nov. 2011. This essay is about the symbolism and religious analogies throughout the novel. It describes the characterization of the male and female roles and their purpose as it relates to the theme. Aubreys essay is shorter than some, and doesnt provide as much information as a result, though the information is accurate and well-developed. This essay has no new information on my topic and is therefore redundant and unnecessary to my research. For that purpose, I have decided not to use it since I have other sources that include the same information presented by Aubrey. Owens, Louis. "The Story of a Writing: Narrative Structure in East of Eden." Rediscovering Steinbeck: Revisionist Views of His Art, Politics, and Intellect. Ed. Cliff Lewis and Carroll Britch. Edwin Mellen Press, 1989. 60-76. Rpt. in Contemporary Literary Criticism. Ed. Jeffrey W. Hunter. Vol. 124. Detroit: Gale Group, 2000. Literature Resource Center. Web. 9 Nov. 2011. This essay explores the structure of the novel and addresses Steinbecks view of realism and the writing process. The premise is that the main character is a biographical portrait of Steinbeck as he matures into an artist and an adult. Owens not only develops his own view of the novel, but uses as support the educated opinions of others, such as E.M. Forster. His argument is well-developed with apt examples from the novel as evidence. This essay will help with developing my introduction, and also gives some key points from the text that will need to be addressed in my paper. I have also gotten the idea to go to Forster as a source of criticism.
